The resurrection plant", Selaginella lepidophylla is a plant species of the spikemoss family that is native to North America, Central and South America. It is one of several polkilolohydric plants from around the world that can survive conditions of severe dehydration.
This unique plant evolved in the desert through the millennia. It can survive without water for many years if needed by going into a sort of suspended state with dehydrating. When it does receive water, it will revive.
Your Resurrection Plant will arrive dry, appearing to be "dead as a doornail". Place it on a small plate or dish and add water. Shortly the plant will spring back to life. Exposed to light, this revival continues with some greening from production of chlorophyll.
Selaginella lepidophylla is also called "dinosaur plant", "dinosaur fern", "stone flower", "rose of Jericho" (or "false rose of Jericho"), "air plant", "miracle plant", "resurrection fern" and "resurrection moss".
Although it is usually sold as a novelty due to its curious nature, this plant is sometimes used as an antimicrobial herbal medicine for colds, flu, etc. For that purpose a tea infusion is made from the the dried material by steeping in hot water.
You can place the Resurrection Plant in a shallow pot or container with potting soil or sand for long term growth. There is no problem if you forget to water it. Whenever you do, it will resurrect!
This unusual plant is interesting, even fascinating to observe for both adults and children.
Many Christians enjoy the plant as a reminder of their faith.
