The thymus gland is a lesser discussed lymphoid gland in the chest in front of the heart. T-cells or T-lymphocytes, which are an important part of the body's response to foreign invaders, mature in the thymus gland with stimulation from the hormone thymosin.The thymus is thought by health researchers to only function through puberty, producing by then all the T-cells needed, then shrinking over the years to become just a blob of fat.
