Tocotrienols

What Are Tocotrienols?
Vitamin E, long considered "a vitamin looking for a disease," plays an essential role in maintaining the structure and function of the human nervous system as well as being a powerful antioxidant that prevents free radical damage and enhances the immune system.

When Vitamin E was originally being isolated, it was proposed to call the components tocopherols. Thus, a basic class of the initial four compounds were known as alpha, beta, delta and gamma tocopherols. The term "Vitamin E" now refers to a class of fat soluble antioxidants consisting of both tocopherols and tocotrienols

Lately, as a result of research, tocotrienols have been found to exert powerful antioxidant, anticancer and cholesterol-lowering capabilities. In their antioxidant function, some of the tocotrienols have been found to be 6,000 times more potent than alpha tocopherol, and other tocotrienols are between 40-200 times more potent than alpha tocopherol.

An important antioxidant function of tocotrienols is in helping prevent cellular damage that may lead to cancer or other degenerative disease conditions. Due to the molecular structure of tocotrienols, they are able to easily penetrate tissues containing saturated fatty layers, such as those found in the brain and liver.

When combined, the synergistic effects of tocotrienols with other nutrients can deliver up to 100 times more powerful an antioxidant benefit than either pycnogenols or grape seed extracts alone.

Tocotrienols and the Liver

The liver's vital functions include metabolizing fats (and thus preventing their accumulation in the bloodstream), synthesizing necessary blood proteins, breaking down and eliminating toxic substances, and secreting bile. A healthy liver converts nutrients into a usable form for cells in other parts of the body.

Tocotrienols very beneficial for detoxifying the liver. As the liver detoxifies our blood it becomes the most abused organ in our body because of our exposure to toxins in our modern lifestyle.

The liver is the body's largest internal organ. It is the main site of and the regulator of amino acid metabolism.

Proteins are made and broken down daily. Although about 60-70 percent of the amino acids available in the body are recycled from old tissue proteins, the importance of receiving a sufficient level of all the amino acids cannot be stressed enough. We must have a constant supply of amino acids to build the proteins that create our body’s tissues and influence the body's weight, shape and tone.

Tocotrienols are found in the bran of various seeds. Rice bran is one of the richest sources. A full spectrum vitamin E complex would include tocotrienols as well as mixed tocopherols.
