What is DMSO?

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a by-product of the wood pulp and paper industry. It has been used as a solvent for a couple of centuries.
It is known that DMSO is easily absorbed through the skin. When applied to the skin, it carries whatever elements such as nutrients that are integrated with it, deep into the cells of the body. DMSO can also cause a strong garlic-like odor as they share some sulfur compounds.
In his famous Herbal Lecture Series (10 cassette tapes), Dr. John Christopher enthusiastically mentions the ability of DMSO to penetrate deeply into the tissue and relieve pain. He tells a story on how about 75 years ago people in the wood pulp industry were noticing that their arthritis was going away. The connection was made that DMSO served as an anti-inflammatory agent, and word spread.
DMSO is approved by the FDA as a prescription for pain for bladder inflammation, interstitial cystitis. It can also be used medically for treating shingles.
DMSO products have sold steadily for many years as a liquid, gel or cream in various concentrations. It is usually applied to the skin, although it is also used orally. Numerous testimonials have been generated.
Reports are widespread globally of DMSO being used as a unique agent in the treatment of many painful and inflammatory conditions from burns and bruises to headaches and arthritis. It is particularly known for pain relief in a limb after an injury, including the legs of horses.

MSM stands for Methylsulfonylmethane. Also known as dimethylsulfone - DMSO2, MSM is chemically similar to DMSO.
